Quoting Geoffrey Huntley

Context
A coding convention becomes enforceable when breaking it stops a commit and tells the what to fix. In a passage quoted by Simon Willison, Geoffrey Huntley explains that writing the rule into AGENTS.md, the instruction file agents read, still leaves room for drift. Huntley instead writes a pre-commit , a check that runs before changes are recorded in version control. It inspects the diff for direct calls to observability modules that bypass the project's diagnostics library, fails the commit, and gives the agent a prompt telling it to use the library. Huntley describes compliance then reaching ten out of ten. The mechanism is immediate, specific feedback the agent can act on. The account describes one developer's experience, not a measured study.
- AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
- agent hook — A script the harness runs automatically at a fixed point in an agent's loop — before a tool call, after an edit, on session start.
