About

Bastardica is a browser-based type foundry that mixes two or more fonts together, substituting glyphs from a base font with ones from a mix-in font at a set stride using OpenType contextual ligatures, with optional stretch and squish effects. It runs entirely client-side via Pyodide and fontTools and exports the result as a downloadable TTF, OTF, or WOFF2 font.

At a glance

Bastardica mixes glyphs from different fonts into one experimental typeface in the browser. It is worth a look for playful headings, posters or a deliberately uneven visual voice. The live preview makes that effect tangible: changing the interval to two visibly alternated serif and sans-serif letters in the trial.

Good fit

Designers exploring an expressive typographic idea before committing it to a project. Choose a base font and a mix-in, set how often substitutions occur and type your own sample. That feedback is more useful than choosing from a static specimen because you can see whether the interruptions suit the actual words you plan to use.

Consider something else when

You need a restrained body font, established cross-application compatibility or commercial redistribution rights without checking the source fonts. The effect deliberately disrupts consistency. Generated font features also depend on contextual ligatures being supported and enabled in the destination, so a pleasing browser preview is only the first check.

Start here

Start with the built-in fonts and wait for Generated font and TTF ready. Set Glyph interval to two and enter a short sample in Preview text. The trial used a fictional library-hours sentence and showed alternating letter styles. Once the mix suits the intended wording, check the original fonts’ modification and distribution permissions before considering export.

Cost and requirements

The public preview opened without signup or payment. Font processing uses a browser worker with Pyodide and fontTools; initialisation loads runtime/font resources, so allow that to finish before judging the controls. Source inspection also found analytics and external asset fetching, so browser-side font processing should not be mistaken for a wholly offline page.

Limits to know

TTF, OTF and WOFF2 export are offered, but no font was downloaded, uploaded, installed or tested in another application for this review. The successful trial establishes the built-in preview interaction, not exported-file validity or every glyph combination. Use it for exploration, then validate the specific text, format and destination app before production use.
