Context
An buying access to data needs both a payment method and a way to find a suitable service. Sam Ragsdale makes that distinction in an essay on agent commerce. A payment protocol can describe how to pay; discovery tells the agent what is available.
Ragsdale describes payment protocols such as Coinbase's as answering two questions: how an agent sends money, and how a merchant confirms that it was paid. Finding services to buy remains a separate problem. Ragsdale presents AgentCash as combining a single balance with merchant discovery, where merchants register their servers so agents using AgentCash can find them. The prediction that open agent payments will replace advertising remains a broader economic thesis.
- HTTP's '402 Payment Required' status was invented in the 1990s for exactly this problem: a server charging a small fee to serve content. It went unused because card fees ran tens of cents, killing any one-cent payment.
- Ads worked by inserting a third party into a two-party relationship. Producers could monetize a stranger's with no prior relationship, and Google sat in the money flow setting its own take rate.
- The damage is already measurable: Stack Overflow pageviews down roughly 75% since GPT-4, tech news traffic down about 60%. Technical audiences went first only because they adopted earliest.
- Walled gardens like Facebook and TikTok held value by paying engineers to block scrapers. Computer-use agents, which browse the way a person does, break that defense.
- AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
- x402 — A payment protocol built on HTTP's long-unused 402 status code, letting a server charge per request so software agents can pay without an account.
- attention — The mechanism that lets a model weigh which earlier words matter for the word it's currently processing — the core operation of a transformer.
“There is some beautiful irony in ads creating the free and open internet, which became the 10 trillion token dataset that created LLMs, leading to the downfall of ads.”
“It's a fundamental principle of capitalism: innovation comes from the edges.”
“StackOverflow views are down 75% since GPT-4, Tech news traffic down 60% etc.”
“Checkout in ChatGPT doesn't matter. The internet is civilization's town square and the economic contract is now obsolete.”
