Transformers now runs llama.cpp quants

Context
Hugging Face's Transformers integration lets developers run supported GGUF models while keeping its familiar Python interface. GGUF files can store model weights at reduced precision to save memory. The integration reuses llama.cpp's underlying computation routines to operate on those compressed weights without expanding the whole weight matrix.
The initial packed-weight path targets Apple Silicon Macs and the Qwen3.5 dense and architectures from Qwen, with limits around batching and broader model support. Without a compatible computation routine, loading falls back to expanded weights and uses more memory. The useful change is access to compact local models inside an existing experimentation workflow; selecting a GGUF file alone does not establish that it will run compactly on every device.
- mixture-of-experts — A model built from many specialist sub-networks where only a few activate per token, giving big-model capability at small-model running cost.
- quantization — Shrinking a model by storing its numbers less precisely — like rounding — so it runs faster and fits on smaller hardware, at a small quality cost.
