We covered the launch of dots last week, and this interview adds OpenAI's reasoning behind it rather than a new product. Tibo Sottiaux, who leads ChatGPT at OpenAI, told Lenny Rachitsky at DevDay that he expects most actions people take on the internet to move to agents. The more pointed claim concerns how agents are built today. Sottiaux argued that hand-written workflow scaffolding, such as fixed loops and orchestration graphs, is temporary, and that more of that structure will be handled by the model itself. For teams deciding what to invest in, that is a direct statement of where one major lab expects the work to go. It is also a prediction from a company that sells the models, so it should be weighed against the reliability teams see today. A reasonable reading is to keep orchestration code thin and easy to remove, and to put effort into evaluations and tool quality that survive a change in model behavior.

Context

OpenAI describes Dots as personal AI agents that keep working on an assigned responsibility between conversations, returning work and decisions for review. Its official feature page says they use their own cloud computers, ChatGPT memory and connected tools to carry out tasks. Dots features in the podcast interview with Tibo Sottiaux, who leads ChatGPT and Codex.

Delegation includes setting the 's boundaries. According to the product page, users choose which apps to connect and can set rules that permit particular actions, require approval or block them. They can also inspect progress, redirect the work or pause it. The intended workflow lets the agent handle follow-through while bringing decisions that require human judgment back to the user.
