Measuring benchmark optimization in speech recognition

Context

A speech recognizer can earn a better score by reproducing the answer key's mistakes. In a study of 11 speech-recognition models, researchers found examples where systems omitted audible words to match faulty reference transcripts, recovered numbers that had been silenced, or selected the spelling expected by the test.

Several effects weakened with newly collected recordings or changes to the surrounding audio. That supports the authors' interpretation that some models respond to cues associated with familiar datasets. It does not establish deliberate cheating. For model selection, the finding favors testing fresh speakers and recordings alongside public benchmark scores.
