Context

Pedalican shows how generated pictures can become a small animated interface character. Simon Willison asked an OpenAI Codex Desktop setup to create a custom pet, a pelican riding a bicycle, and reports that the coordinated several image-generation rounds to produce the assets. Willison's account describes the resulting desktop pet and publishes the intermediate work.

The reusable part is the assembly process. A generated reference character guides the different poses; generated strips are then extracted into frames and fitted into a prescribed animation layout. The project notes explicitly separate image generation from deterministic frame assembly. That gives developers a concrete workflow to inspect when turning generated artwork into animated assets.
