Context

OpenRouter’s hosted shell gives a tool-calling model a place to execute commands and inspect what happened. Its September 2026 announcement describes a Linux container that returns command output, errors and exit status, allowing the model to revise a failed script before answering. A companion Files API supplies uploaded inputs and access to generated outputs. Requests can reuse a container to retain working files. This supplies the execution side of an workflow through the service; outbound container network access is disabled by default and must be configured explicitly.
