About

Modular React component library. Component library with accessible defaults, themeable design tokens, and a style props API. Popular for teams that want batteries-included UI.

What it does

This is a prebuilt set of interface pieces for React: buttons, dialogs, menus, forms, navigation, and dozens more, wired for keyboard and screen-reader use out of the box. You style them by setting properties directly on the component rather than writing separate CSS, and a shared set of design values keeps color, spacing, and typography consistent across a whole app. The harder interaction logic for things like comboboxes and date pickers is handled by a separate state-machine project from the same maintainers, so this layer concentrates on composition and visual styling.

Why it's ranked here

MIT licensed, and the component surface is genuinely broad: over a hundred exported components in one package, covering everything from breadcrumbs to a file upload widget. Accessibility is not just marketing copy either, the test toolchain includes an axe-based checker. The catch is scope: mechanism bugs point back to a project this repository does not own, and using the migration tool or theme typing generator means learning another CLI on top of React itself. Requiring Node 22 also narrows who can adopt it without a runtime upgrade first.

What's good

The accessibility story has tooling behind it, not just claims: an axe-based accessibility test package sits next to the standard component-testing library. Upgrades come with a dedicated codemod command that rewrites your code automatically instead of leaving you to work through a changelog by hand. A typed token generator gives autocomplete and validation for custom theme values. The project also ships its own MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, so an AI coding assistant can look up components and their props directly.

Tradeoffs

Logic bugs in interactive widgets often are not this project's to fix: the contributing guide sends behavior and accessibility bugs to a separate sibling library, so a fix can mean waiting on a different repository's release cycle. The premium "blocks" feature needs a paid subscription and an API key just to preview, which sits oddly inside an otherwise open package. Node 22 is the minimum supported runtime, which rules out older deployment environments without an upgrade first.

How to use it well

Reach for this when a team needs a wide range of accessible components fast and does not want to build focus management, keyboard navigation, or ARIA wiring by hand. If you customize the theme in TypeScript, wire the typing generator into your install step, not both your install and pack steps, so generated types do not fall out of sync. Run the codemod command on a major version bump instead of migrating by hand. Skip it if you need a minimal runtime footprint or full control over every widget's internal behavior, since the harder logic lives one layer down in a separate library.

Technical notes+

packages/react/src/components/index.ts re-exports more than 100 components from absolute-center through wrap, confirming the breadth claimed above. packages/react/src/theme/index.ts assembles the token system (colors, spacing, radii, animations) into a single defaultThemeConfig alongside semantic tokens and recipes. packages/cli/src/index.ts and packages/codemod/src/index.ts are separate commander-based CLIs for typegen, snippets and blocks, and for version upgrades respectively. apps/mcp/src/server.ts registers an McpServer named chakra-ui with prompts, resources and tools capabilities. CONTRIBUTING.md states that logic or accessibility bugs likely belong in the Zag.js repository rather than this one. package.json pins node >=22.x in engines and lists vitest-axe among devDependencies.
