Context
Buying generators does not by itself give an AI data center an operating power supply. SemiAnalysis describes an interlocking construction problem: developers need equipment deposits to establish a credible schedule, customers want confidence in that schedule, and lenders want a committed customer before financing the project. Its analysis explains how that dependency can stall projects before construction.
Even after financing, the generators need fuel delivery, electrical equipment and qualified installation crews. Transformers and switchgear must connect the machines into a working plant. Onsite generation can provide an alternative to waiting for grid supply, but the report's execution analysis shows why equipment orders alone are an incomplete measure of usable computing capacity.
“Paying 2x more money or accepting 30% lower efficiency for faster speed of deployment becomes a no-brainer.”
“Anthropic and its peers can pay back the value of a power plant in 20 days of inference revenue.”
“A turbine order and a nearby pipeline do not make a project.”
