Context
A self-modification experiment with DeepSeek exposed a gap between passing a test and delivering a usable feature. According to the project report, the reached the supplied audio evaluator's maximum score in its second development episode. Much later, it discovered that the transcription component was not connected to the default application setup.
The agent subsequently repaired that connection and added reusable checks for the assembled application. The experiment concerns software that converts audio into a transcript for the model to use. The report describes one run by its author, so it is a case study rather than a general result, but it illustrates how a narrowly successful evaluator can miss whether a feature is available through the product's normal entry point.
- agent harness — The scaffolding around a model that turns it into a working agent — the loop, the tools it can call, and the rules for when to stop.
- AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
