About
VernLLM is a TypeScript framework that wraps existing LLM provider SDKs, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, and dozens of others, to add retries with backoff, provider fallback, circuit breaking, rate limiting, retry budgets, timeouts, and response caching. It runs entirely inside the developer's own process rather than through an external gateway service.
At a glance
VernLLM wraps model calls with controls such as retries, fallback and rate limiting. It is worth evaluating if several parts of your application are implementing those controls separately.
Good fit
JavaScript and TypeScript teams that want consistent call behavior across providers.
Consider something else when
Keep a direct SDK call for a small integration that has no retry or routing complexity.
Start here
Use a mock provider that fails once. Check whether the retry or fallback follows your policy and which details are recorded before routing real prompts.
Cost and requirements
MIT-licensed. The project publishes a core npm package and optional integrations. Provider usage and external state or telemetry services may add costs.
Limits to know
Retries can increase usage and fallback can send requests to a different provider. Check data rules and shared state when running across processes.

Why it made the leaderboard
Adds production-grade reliability (fallback, circuit breaking, rate limiting) directly around existing OpenAI/Anthropic SDK calls, without standing up or paying for a separate LLM gateway service.
