About

Company as Code is an open standard for writing down a company's goals, roles, processes, and policies as plain markdown files in git, each with a small typed header and normal-language body. It aims to give every new AI agent session, which the project treats as effectively a new coworker starting from zero, a consistent set of rules to follow, while a small tool validates the files like code.

At a glance

Company as Code puts processes, roles, goals and policies into linked Markdown files. It is worth exploring if changes to who owns a process routinely leave stale instructions scattered across your team’s docs.

Good fit

Teams that want versioned operating instructions and can maintain a small set of typed references in Git.

Consider something else when

Use an enforcement system if a policy must technically prevent an agent from taking an action. A linked policy file is documentation.

Start here

Model one recurring process with a fictional owner and policy. Validate the files, then rename the owner in a scratch copy and check that the validator flags the broken reference.

Cost and requirements

The charta command-line tool is documented for macOS, Linux and Windows. Its files use Markdown with typed headers and can sit beside ordinary notes in Git.

Limits to know

Reference validation can tell you a role or policy is missing. It cannot tell you whether the written procedure is accurate or whether an agent follows it.
