About

Identity platform for developers. Enterprise-grade identity-as-a-service: social, enterprise SSO, MFA, and authorization. Owned by Okta. Free up to 25,000 MAU.

What it does

This is a command line client for managing an identity platform's cloud resources without leaving a terminal. After authenticating either as a person through a device code flow or as a machine using client credentials, the CLI talks to the vendor's management API to create, list, update, and delete applications, APIs, and login-flow logic, and it can tail live authentication events for troubleshooting in real time.

Why it's ranked here

Multiple install paths (package managers for both major desktop platforms plus a portable binary), a documented split between interactive user login and machine-credential login for CI, and paired unit and integration test targets in the build tooling point to a tool built for daily operational use, not a demo wrapper. That makes it the practical way a development team actually touches this identity platform's resources from a shell, script, or pipeline, rather than clicking through a dashboard for every change.

What's good

Authentication error messages spell out the likely cause instead of a bare failure: a rejected token points to a deleted application, a rotated secret, or a keyring write failure, and tells the user exactly which command fixes it. Login sessions store credentials in the operating system's keyring rather than a plain config file, and expired sessions prompt to reuse the existing default tenant rather than forcing a full reauthentication from scratch.

Tradeoffs

The beta channel does not support the interactive personal login flow at all, so testing pre-release features means switching to machine credentials only, and Go's own version resolution will not fetch a beta build automatically, forcing a manual tagged install instead of the usual shortcut for grabbing the newest version. The dependency tree is large, pulling in a full templating and terminal-rendering stack alongside the API client, which is a lot of surface area for what is fundamentally a wrapper around a management API.

How to use it well

Reach for this when scripting or automating an identity tenant: CI pipelines should authenticate with machine credentials and pass explicit flags rather than relying on interactive prompts, and destructive operations need an explicit force flag when run non-interactively so an automated agent never deletes something silently. The live event tail is best kept open in a side terminal while debugging a login integration. It is a management and automation layer on top of the platform, not a replacement for exploring resources visually first.

Technical notes+

The binary entry point in cmd/auth0/main.go is two lines that call cli.Execute(), defined in internal/cli/cli.go; that file builds a cli struct holding both a legacy auth0.API client and a newer auth0.APIV3 client alongside a display.Renderer and an analytics.Tracker, and its setupWithAuthentication() method branches on missing-scope, invalid-token, and malformed-token error states, calling RunLoginAsUser() or RegenerateAccessToken() as appropriate, with a --no-input check that fails fast instead of blocking on an interactive prompt. go.mod declares Go 1.26.0 and lists spf13/cobra, two parallel major versions of lestrrat-go/jwx, zalando/go-keyring, getsentry/sentry-go, and hashicorp/terraform-exec/hc-install among its dependencies, plus a go.uber.org/mock/mockgen tool directive for generating test mocks. The Makefile defines separate test-unit and test-integration targets (the latter building the binary with coverage instrumentation first), alongside lint, check-vuln, and docs targets, and README.md documents three separate install paths (Homebrew/Scoop, curl script, go install) each with its own beta-channel variant.

Observed

Language
Written in Go (module github.com/auth0/auth0-cli); Go 1.26.0 is declared in go.mod.
Interface
Interface is a command-line tool built on the Cobra framework, with output-format flags for table, JSON, compact JSON, and CSV.
Distribution
Ships prebuilt binaries for macOS, Linux, and Windows, installable via Homebrew, Scoop, a curl install script, go install, or manual download.
Authentication
Two authentication modes are implemented: interactive device-authorization login for people and client-credentials login for machines and CI.
Credential storage
Credentials are persisted through an OS keyring library rather than a plaintext file.
Error reporting
A Sentry error-reporting library (getsentry/sentry-go) appears among direct dependencies.
Test tooling
The Makefile defines distinct unit-test and integration-test targets plus lint and vulnerability-check targets, indicating test tooling is part of the build.
License
No LICENSE file was fetched; the README shows only a GitHub-generated license badge, not license text.
