Analyzing coding agent transcripts to upper bound productivity gains from AI agents

Context
A transcript can show that an completed substantial work without showing how much more productive its user became. This METR exploratory analysis used a model to estimate how long the successful work in coding sessions would have taken without AI, then compared that estimate with the user's recorded activity.
The central limitation is the missing alternative: people may use AI for tasks they would otherwise skip, and the transcripts omit work they do without it. The time estimates themselves also have substantial error. Consequently, a large estimated saving on recorded tasks does not establish the same increase in valuable work across a person's day. The study treats its method as preliminary rather than a replacement for controlled productivity research.
- AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
- LLM — A large language model — the neural network behind tools like Claude and ChatGPT, trained on huge amounts of text to predict what comes next.
