About
MIT-licensed UI library that compiles JSX to browser elements and uses signals to track reactive updates. Component setup runs at initialization, while dependent expressions update as state changes. SolidStart is the related full-stack framework. Application performance and bundle size were not measured.
At a glance
SolidJS is worth prototyping for an interactive web interface when you want state changes to update the parts that depend on them. It compiles JSX into real browser elements and connects updates through reactive primitives called signals. That gives you direct control over dependencies without rebuilding a virtual tree for each change. The tradeoff is learning where reads are tracked; familiar JSX alone does not make it the same programming model as React.
Good fit
Developers building a new interface, or an isolated part of one, who are willing to learn signals and explicit reactive scopes. A signal provides a getter and setter. Reading the getter in reactive JSX or an effect establishes a dependency; changing the value updates its subscribers. Component setup runs at initialization rather than rerunning for each signal change. This can make the relationship between state and an update easier to follow, provided the team understands that model.
Consider something else when
Your immediate goal is to reuse an existing React application and its components with minimal adaptation, or you need a speed improvement justified by your own workload. A different reactive runtime and JSX compilation require evaluating dependencies and integration work. Reading a signal once outside a tracking scope will not make that code rerun later. SolidStart is the related full-stack framework; choosing SolidJS alone is not the same decision as choosing a complete application stack.
Start here
Start with the official quick-start playground or a small local counter. The documented counter uses createSignal(0), displays count() in JSX and updates it from a button handler with setCount. The expected result is a changing number while the component’s setup code remains an initialization step. To try the local scaffold, the official create-solid documentation uses npm init solid@latest; select whether you want SolidStart, choose a template, then follow the generated install and development-server steps. These are documented first steps, not a setup or browser trial performed for this review.
Cost and requirements
SolidJS is MIT-licensed, with no library subscription required. Building and hosting your application, backend services and any commercial dependencies still have their own costs. The quick start recommends a current JavaScript runtime, with the latest Node.js LTS as one option. JSX needs the Solid compilation setup; installing the library does not make an existing compiler target it automatically. The project documents modern browser support and provides client and server rendering paths. No dependency installation, production build or browser compatibility test was run here.
Limits to know
The runtime source, package manifests and official documentation support the signal/getter/setter and compiled-update model; they do not establish a particular application’s speed, bundle size or migration cost. Research covered the current documentation, manifests and selected runtime source. It did not build an app, test SSR or hydration, measure performance, or audit integrations. As an application library, SolidJS also leaves storage, authentication and external data transfers to the application you build; its licence is not a privacy guarantee.

Why it made the leaderboard
Worth prototyping when you want explicit state dependencies and targeted UI updates. The main adoption cost is learning reactive tracking and checking application dependencies, rather than assuming familiar JSX makes it a drop-in migration.
