Sonnet 5.5 ships: faster, same price, org-bound preserved thinking

Sonnet 5.5 is smarter, more efficient, and 30% faster than Sonnet 5. It costs up to 30% less for most work, so your Claude Code usage goes further too. Use it for well-scoped everyday tasks like fixing bugs and quickly iterating on features. https://t.co/hSlp8eClQS

Price is the same as Sonnet 5: $2/$10 per million tokens with cache reads at $0.20. Thinking is always on but you can use `between_tools` to turn off upfront thinking. Here’s our Sonnet 5.5 migration guide: https://t.co/8CUKQrUqNO.

We recommend starting with Opus for large projects and Sonnet for tasks where you need to balance quality with speed and cost. Claude apps default to medium effort, while Platform is at high. Cranking Sonnet to max loses some of the balance (and you might want to consider Opus).

We’re extending preserved thinking with Sonnet 5.5 to curb distillation attacks via account-switching. Thinking stays in the original org that generated it, so if you switch accounts mid-session, Claude will reread the session and generate new thinking. https://t.co/AmQ2qiNDPR

Context

Sonnet 5.5 ties preserved thinking to the organization that generated it. In its launch thread, Anthropic says it is extending preserved thinking with Sonnet 5.5, and that thinking stays in the original organization. If a user switches accounts mid-session, Claude rereads the session and generates new thinking.

Anthropic gives the purpose as curbing attacks via account-switching. The concrete behavior is narrower than a general security guarantee: the conversation can be reread, but its preserved thinking is not carried across that organization boundary, and the thread reports no measured effect on attacks.

Terms in this piece · Glossary
  • distillation — Training a small, cheap model to imitate a big one's outputs, keeping much of the capability at a fraction of the cost.
