AstroHelm is an iOS and Android app that finds where a telescope or telephoto lens is pointing by plate solving: it identifies the star pattern in a phone camera image, so the phone must be rigidly attached to the optics. It then shows an on-screen arrow to guide the user to a chosen object. Processing runs on the device with no internet connection, and it includes beginner-friendly objects selected for each night.
Why it made the leaderboard
AstroHelm points telescopes or camera lenses accurately by photographing the sky and matching star patterns on-device, sidestepping the poor accuracy of phone gyroscopes and magnetometers that most stargazing apps rely on.
