OpenCode Founder Calls Out Misleading Open-Source Router Stats

there's few company oriented around open-source models more than us but this thing where companies are posting "data" showing open-source overtaking frontier is complete nonsense 1. most see so little traffic they make sure they only share %s and never real numbers so they can seem bigger than they are 2. no router has any real reason to see 99% of frontier traffic they're all just trying to capture mindshare like they're on the cutting edge of something big happening

Context

Dax, founder of the coding tool OpenCode (@thdxr), argued in a September 20 post that router data showing open-source models overtaking frontier models is "complete nonsense," even though he says few companies are more oriented around open-source models than his. A model router is a service that sends AI requests to many providers, so it sees only a slice of overall traffic.

He gives two reasons. Most routers see so little traffic that they share only percentages, never real numbers, which can make them look bigger than they are. And no router has a real reason to see 99% of frontier traffic, so what one router observes is not a view of all usage. He adds that they are trying to capture mindshare. This is his opinion, not an audited finding, and he names no company or report.
