WebGCM is a general circulation climate model that runs entirely in the browser using WebGPU, simulating a hydrostatic primitive-equation atmosphere on a roughly 41,000-cell hexagonal global grid with 27 vertical levels, plus grey radiation, moist convection, sea ice, land surface/snow, and a two-layer ocean with real topography. Built solo over four and a half years as an educational toy, the project stalled on the underlying physics for years until AI coding assistance helped complete a working model in a single weekend, now simulating about 70 hours of climate per minute on a MacBook Pro M1 Max.
Why it made the leaderboard
An interactive, scientifically grounded planetary climate simulator anyone can explore in a browser, showing what a single person plus an AI coding agent can finish in a weekend on a problem that stalled for years.
