Auto mode is rolling out today as the default permission mode in Claude Code for Pro, Max, and Team. If you've already set a default mode, Claude will ask before changing anything. You can still switch modes any time with Shift+Tab, or pin one with "defaultMode" in settings. https://t.co/7LSjv7g9Wv
Context
Anthropic's August 14 announcement made auto mode the rolling default for Claude Code's Pro, Max and Team users. It said users with an explicitly configured default would be asked before changing it, and could still switch modes or set their preferred default.
Auto mode delegates permission judgments to a separate model-based classifier. As the earlier engineering explanation describes, the aim is to let routine work proceed while identifying actions that exceed the user's intent. The primary engineering account explains how planned actions are reviewed before execution. The rollout changes the default approval workflow while retaining a user choice of permission mode.
