China is killing the US on energy. Does that mean they’ll win AGI? — Casey Handmer

Context

Casey Handmer, founder and CEO of Terraform Industries, which is working on synthetic fuels made from electricity, argued to Dwarkesh Patel in this interview that China's solar manufacturing lead is unlikely to decide the AI race. In Handmer's view the bottleneck for data centers is chips, not solar panels: even a 200 percent US tariff on Chinese panels would hardly matter to a data center's overall cost. Handmer also said the US could rebuild domestic solar manufacturing in about two years if it started at once, while Patel noted that this assumes wartime-level motivation rather than current policy.

Handmer acknowledged why data center builders now choose natural gas: it is fast, because a gas line can carry more energy than power lines and turbines can be rented. As projects grow, limits such as turbine and production and grid capacity appear. Handmer also agreed that cheap synthetic fuels would asymmetrically help China. This is the argument of a founder with a stake in the field, not a tested forecast.
