Context
In an interview on Lex Fridman's podcast, Peter Steinberger describes how OpenClaw, an open-source that works through messaging apps, began as a roughly one-hour prototype. A WhatsApp message arrived, Steinberger passed it to the Claude Code command line, and sent the reply text back. A few more hours went into adding images, and Steinberger used it while traveling to translate, explain and look things up.
The prototype was a thin relay, with Claude Code doing the work, and it was slow because the command line restarted each time. Fridman says in the introduction that OpenClaw's power comes from access to a user's files and accounts, which also makes it a security risk. The origin story is Steinberger's own account.
- AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
- agent harness — The scaffolding around a model that turns it into a working agent — the loop, the tools it can call, and the rules for when to stop.
