OpenAI's GPT-6 Sol and Luna Arrive on Vercel AI Gateway

Vercel adds two GPT-6-tier models: Sol for sustained coding work, Luna for high-volume agentic tasks, both priced below GPT-6 Astra.

How this coverage works

OpenAI's GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are now available through Vercel's AI Gateway, according to Vercel's official changelog. Both models bring the GPT-6 generation's improvements in professional work, coding, computer use, factuality, and communication at a lower price than GPT-6 Astra, per Vercel's announcement.

The two models target different workloads. GPT-6 Sol (openai/gpt-6-sol) is suited to complex professional workflows and sustained coding tasks where quality and room to iterate both matter, Vercel's listing states. GPT-6 Luna (openai/gpt-6-luna) is positioned as the lower-cost option for high-volume agentic workflows, coding, and everyday tasks.

Vercel says both Sol and Luna communicate more directly than their GPT-5.6 counterparts, with less jargon and fewer low-value details. The company also says both models improve factual reliability and are less likely to make misleading claims about work completed during coding tasks, though these comparisons come from Vercel's own listing rather than an independent evaluation.

Developers can call openai/gpt-6-sol and openai/gpt-6-luna through the AI SDK, the OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions API, the OpenAI-compatible Responses API, or coding agents connected to AI Gateway, according to Vercel. Connecting a supported coding agent requires installing the latest Vercel CLI and running vercel ai-gateway setup, after which developers can select gpt-6-sol for longer or more demanding coding work, or gpt-6-luna when throughput is the priority.

The release extends AI Gateway's lineup of GPT-6-tier models, giving developers a cheaper route to GPT-6-generation quality split across a higher-quality, slower option and a faster, cheaper one, continuing a pattern of new frontier and mid-tier models landing on Vercel's unified routing layer alongside usage tracking, retries, and failover.
