Claude is no longer available for minors

Anthropic has rolled out age assurance checks that block access to Claude for users identified as minors, a policy shift that changes who can reach the product and what verification other users may now need to complete. The change affects both Anthropic's own consumer surfaces and anything built on top of them, since an integration that assumed open access for any age now needs to account for age verification in its own onboarding flow. Teams building consumer apps, chat widgets, or educational tools on Claude should check whether their own age-gating already matches this requirement or whether they now need a separate check of their own. This is part of a broader industry move toward stricter age verification for AI products, and it is worth tracking whether other labs follow with similar restrictions in the coming weeks.

Context
Anthropic's consumer Claude service requires users to be at least 18, and an account can be disabled when its systems detect indications of underage use. An adult affected by that decision can follow the verification link in the notification email; passing the check reinstates access. The help article dated May 18, 2026 describes this enforcement process without establishing that the age restriction began with this announcement.
Verification can use a selfie-based age estimate, an identity document or an existing verified digital identity. Anthropic says the third-party verifier handles those materials and sends it only a pass-or-fail result.
