New from The LangSmith Signal: Open-weight models are on the rise, and ready for production. ✅ 1 in 3 active teams ran an open weight model in July, up from 1 in 5 years ago. ✅ Teams running an open-weight model daily grew 9x YoY, while closed models usage grew 4.8x YoY.
Context
models reached more teams on LangChain's LangSmith platform between August 2025 and July 2026. Its published chart shows the share of active teams using one rising from 18.9% to 33.3%. That measures adoption among teams observed by the platform, rather than the share of all AI requests or the entire market.
A second chart starts each model category at an index of 100 and shows open-weight usage growing about ninefold versus 4.8-fold for closed models. Yet its ending counts are 1,106 teams and 8,329 teams respectively. Faster growth from the smaller base supports an adoption story; it does not mean open-weight models had overtaken closed models in team count.
