Context
An analysis of blood samples from a trial of rentosertib, an AI-designed experimental drug for lung fibrosis, found that six protein-based aging clocks all trended toward lower predicted biological age in treated groups than in placebo. A clock of this kind is a model that estimates biological age from protein levels in the blood. The paper in Nature Biotechnology used samples from 42 participants. The outputs are calculated estimates, not direct measurements of years of life gained.
The central uncertainty is what the shift means. Insilico Medicine, the drug's developer, calls the analysis an exploratory biomarker study in patients with lung disease, not clinical proof that rentosertib reverses human aging, and says a healthy-volunteer study is needed. Because every participant had fibrosis, a lower predicted age cannot by itself distinguish slower aging from improvement in the disease. The work supports studying aging-related markers during disease trials, while leaving broader claims about slowing human aging unresolved.
