Context
Version 3.46.0 of OpenAI's official Python library, released November 5, is a routine update that brings the library's settings and types up to date with newer API options. The change most likely to matter to a deployment is regional routing. The client's `data_residency` option, which sends every request to a regional API endpoint, now accepts `au`, `in` and `jp` for Australia, India and Japan, alongside the existing `us`, `eu` and `ae` values. Each maps to its own address, such as au.api.openai.com.
The rest of the release adds type definitions for features on the API side. The model name `gpt-6-rosalind` joins the library's list of known model identifiers, which mainly helps editors autocomplete and type-check it, because the model parameters already accept any name as a string. Image generation gains a `complexity` setting for how much computation goes into planning an image, animated GIF output with a frame count and frame duration, SVG output with a choice of the model that writes the SVG, and the GPT Image 2.6 model names; the library's own descriptions say GIF output and SVG model selection both require separate access. Smaller additions cover a `max_output_` reason in session turn errors, an image option for Responses requests, and a noise-reduction `strength` setting for Realtime audio input.
- token — The chunk of text a model reads and writes in — roughly three-quarters of a word — and the unit AI usage is billed in.
- AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
- context compaction — Summarizing an agent's earlier conversation to free room in the context window so a long session can keep going.
