Context
Perplexity, the AI company best known for its answer-engine search product, also builds an tool called Portable Computer: a that runs an AI agent and its models directly on a user's own computer, so it can read local files and use connected apps like email without sending that data to a server by default.
Perplexity says Portable Computer is now available on Windows PCs equipped with NVIDIA RTX graphics cards, running the harness and models locally while still calling out to larger cloud-hosted models when a task needs more capability than the local setup can provide. The tool had already reached Linux machines with 24GB or larger RTX cards, so this extends the same local-first approach to a much larger pool of everyday Windows machines.
