An 's progress can depend on how its controls translate intentions into actions. In this hackathon talk about the Claude Plays Pokémon project, an Anthropic employee describes Claude struggling to navigate by pressing individual directional buttons. A tool that let it select a destination on the screen handled more of the movement for it.
The developer reports that this made the model get through the game much faster, and says it spares the people building the agent from tedious navigation so they can focus on more interesting problems. The example shows why a game-playing result reflects both the model and its surrounding tools: changing the action interface can remove a recurring obstacle without demonstrating that the model's underlying spatial reasoning improved.
- AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
- agent harness — The scaffolding around a model that turns it into a working agent — the loop, the tools it can call, and the rules for when to stop.
