Context

A conversational can remain available while a helper waits for an external operation. In Anthropic's workshop Q&A, an audience member suggested a coordinator pattern and the team agreed it works well: the main agent handles conversation, while a owns the custom tool call and waits for its result.

That arrangement addresses a limitation the team described earlier in the session: while an agent awaits a custom tool result, execution is paused and new messages are not accepted. Moving that wait to a subagent separates the slow operation from the main conversation. The team describes the helper as a separate thread within the same session, and said the main thread stays idle while subagents work.

Terms in this piece · Glossary
  • AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
  • multi-agent — Using several AI agents on one problem — splitting work in parallel, checking each other, or filling different roles like planner and reviewer.
  • eval — A repeatable test for AI quality — a set of tasks plus scoring — used the way software teams use test suites, because model output is too variable to judge by eyeballing.
