AI Policies: Help or Hindrance? A Software Developer's Perspective

Allowing AI tools does not by itself tell developers which code or data they can share. In a study of 19 developer interviews, participants described friction from manually filtering confidential information, uncertainty about permitted inputs and concern about colleagues introducing unsuitable generated code. Some valued access to licensed tools, while unclear policies left others uncomfortable about sending proprietary material.

The authors recommend making sensitive-data boundaries explicit and supporting policy with training and established code-quality checks. These are recommendations informed by a small, self-selected interview sample, rather than measured reductions in leaks or improvements in productivity.
