Browser automation tools have lacked a reliable way to ask which tab is in the foreground, so some forced every tab to the front, which steals focus from a human user. A Browserbase post by the author of the patch, published through Browserbase, documents a Chromium change that landed in Chrome Canary 150.0.7848.0 on May 20, 2026. Tab targets in the Chrome DevTools Protocol (the interface automation tools use to control Chrome) now carry extra metadata with each tab's position in the tab strip, whether it is active, whether it is pinned, and its tab-group ID. The metadata belongs to the tab container, while separate page targets remain what a tool attaches to in order to inspect and operate content. Clients must request it by querying targets again, because the change does not add notifications when that state changes. The post describes a Canary build, not every browser or operating system.
