He worked as a Senior Manager of Software Development at Amazon (1998-2005) and as a Senior Staff Software Engineer at Google (2005-2018), later joining Grab, and became widely known in 2011 for an internal Google memo (accidentally posted publicly) criticizing the company's platform strategy. He joined Sourcegraph as Head of Engineering in October 2022, and has since become a vocal advocate for AI-assisted "vibe coding," co-authoring a book titled Vibe Coding with Gene Kim.
