Career
Matamala Ortiz worked across graphic design, publishing and programming before co-founding Runway. His own biography lists co-founding the Material design studio and Ediciones DAGA, which publishes South American visual artists, followed by a research residency at NYU’s ITP. In March 2026, Runway announced that he would lead its internal incubator, Runway Labs.[1][2]
Contributions
The original Runway paper, coauthored with Cristóbal Valenzuela and Anastasis Germanidis, describes an interface for using models inside creative applications. A model is packaged with an execution environment and metadata; an integration layer exposes it to other tools. The goal is to reduce the specialist work needed to train, run and deploy a model in a creative workflow. This describes an early platform design, rather than the architecture of every current Runway model.[3]
Ideas
Runway Labs gives a team room to prototype applications of video generation and world models beyond an established editing workflow. Its announcement describes experimentation across new uses and industries. Those proposed applications are a direction for the incubator, not evidence that it has already delivered reliable products in each field.[2]

Start with the model and integration diagrams. Some familiarity with creative software and APIs helps; use this as a history of the product’s interface approach, not documentation for today’s API.
