Alessio Fanelli is a partner and CTO at Decibel and co-host of Latent Space with swyx. He invests in technical founders while building software for his own firm, and interviews the engineers and product leaders behind AI systems.[1][2]

Career
Fanelli studied physics and computer science in Rome before leaving college to develop Smart Torvy, an open-source home-automation project that grew out of a campus hackathon. Decibel’s interview describes a prototype that connected sensors and older building systems. He later joined 645 Ventures through an engineering fellowship and became a principal, investing in developer tools, security, and enterprise software. At Decibel he supports founders on product and hiring while leading its internal software platform.[1][2][3]
Contributions
Latent Space’s Windsurf episode shows Fanelli’s contribution as an interviewer rather than the creator of the guest’s product. He and swyx ask Codeium’s Varun Mohan and Anshul Ramachandran about a coding environment that can make coordinated edits, evaluate its results, and fit into enterprise deployments. The accompanying transcript preserves their questions and the guests’ detailed explanations, giving readers a route from product claims to implementation and distribution choices.[4]
Ideas
The conversation connects models with adoption requirements: retrieval, security, deployment environments, and sales. It helps explain the engineering around a completion model. Fanelli brings an operator’s interest in those details alongside an investor’s concern for reaching technical users.[2][4]

Use the chapter on evaluation methods, then the enterprise discussion, to connect coding-agent behavior with deployment needs. A basic understanding of software development is enough to follow the interview.
