Alex Atallah is the CEO and co-founder of OpenRouter, a marketplace and common API for accessing language models. He previously co-founded OpenSea and served as its CTO, and co-authored a study of model usage observed through OpenRouter.[1][2]

Atallah’s official site identifies OpenRouter as his current company and OpenSea as his previous CTO and co-founder role. It also lists earlier work at Palantir and projects in music streaming, feedback software and databases. His public professional profile records Stanford attendance from 2010 to 2014.[1][5]
Contributions
One interface across competing providers
OpenRouter offers a common entry point to models from different developers and inference providers. Its company overview frames selection around cost, quality and model independence. Atallah’s Latent Space conversation explains the marketplace problem: training a model and getting it into developers’ applications are different jobs, and competing hosts can offer different prices and performance for the same model.[2][3]
Studying use rather than only benchmarks
Atallah co-authored a January 2026 paper analyzing more than 100 trillion tokens observed through OpenRouter. The study examines differences in model adoption, tasks, geography and time, including open-weight models and coding or roleplay use. Its measurements describe activity on the platform, rather than a representative sample of every person or company using AI.[4]
Connecting a browser to a chosen model
Window AI is an earlier browser-extension project linked from Atallah’s site. It lets users connect language models to web applications, separating a website’s interface from the model connection a user brings. This is a smaller implementation to inspect alongside OpenRouter’s marketplace and routing approach.[1][6]
