Alex Newman, known as thedotmack on GitHub, created Claude-Mem, an open-source system for carrying useful project context across coding-agent sessions. The project records observations, summarizes them and retrieves relevant notes when work resumes.[1][2]

Newman’s current work includes the free open-source memory engine and CMEM Pro services for hosted observation and cloud synchronization. The product site distinguishes captured project notes from chat products that can retrieve them: for example, making notes available to ChatGPT does not mean ChatGPT conversations are automatically captured. That distinction matters when deciding where project history will live.[2][4]
Contributions
Memory that survives a new conversation
Claude-Mem captures tool-use observations from supported coding workflows, produces summaries and makes those records available in later sessions. This addresses a practical limit of a fresh chat: the model otherwise needs the developer to explain previous decisions and fixes again. The project’s public source and contributor community allow people to inspect how that memory is created and retrieved.[2][3]
Retrieve the relevant note before the full record
The product describes progressive recall: search for a decision or discovery first, then load its details when needed. Keeping notes outside the immediate conversation can make project history reusable across sessions without loading the entire transcript each time. The usefulness depends on what was captured and what retrieval finds; memory does not guarantee that an old decision is still correct.[3][4]
