Career

Palihapitiya founded Social Capital in 2011. Before that he served on Facebook’s senior executive team and led the development and launch of platforms associated with its growth. Earlier roles included Mayfield, AOL and Winamp. He graduated from the University of Waterloo’s electrical-engineering program in 1999.[1][3]

Contributions

Make the development record part of the system

8090’s company description connects plain-language requirements to technical blueprints and work orders for engineers and agents. Feedback returns to the same development process, while changes remain traceable and tested. The company also describes converting legacy code into readable business rules. This is organizational work presented by Palihapitiya, whose essay emphasizes accountability for the resulting system.[4]

Connect students with startup work

Waterloo describes the venture-creation fund and Social Capital fellowship Palihapitiya helped establish with fellow alumna Brigette Lau. The programs support engineering graduates developing ventures and place co-op students in early-stage companies, connecting technical study with building commercial products.[3]

Ideas

In What Is a Software Factory?, Palihapitiya proposes five tests: begin with business intent, remain coherent as requirements change, function beyond any one operator, trace each output to its origins and assign responsibility for the finished product. His concern is that faster code generation can also accelerate drift among requirements, code and tests. The essay presents 8090’s work as his practical context for that argument.[2]
