Background
Tesla’s corporate biography records Musk’s bachelor’s degrees in physics and business at the University of Pennsylvania and its Wharton School. It also describes earlier ventures in internet software and payments: Zip2 and PayPal. These businesses preceded SpaceX and his leadership of Tesla.[1]
Career
Tesla and SpaceX leadership
Musk has served as Tesla CEO since October 2008 and as a board member since April 2004. SpaceX’s 2026 prospectus records his leadership of that company from May 2002. His public role spans corporate leadership, technical direction and strategy across both businesses.[1][5]
AI enters the SpaceX corporate structure
Musk served as xAI’s CEO from March 2023 until its acquisition by SpaceX in February 2026, according to SpaceX’s prospectus. xAI announced the acquisition on February 2. The prospectus also records xAI’s earlier acquisition of X Holdings in March 2025. That brings the AI business and social platform into SpaceX’s corporate structure. Musk’s role connects AI development to a broader set of engineering businesses, while the individual models and products remain the work of their respective teams.[2][5]
Contributions
In SpaceX’s 2016 presentation Making Humans a Multiplanetary Species, Musk discusses the technical challenges of sustaining a human presence on Mars and potential architectures for doing so. The presentation is useful for understanding the intended system and its dependencies, including the need for industry, government and scientific work. It is a proposal about future capabilities. Its value as a starting work is that it exposes the engineering ambition directly, without requiring a reader to infer it from later headlines.[4]
Ideas
Master Plan, Part Deux is Musk’s 2016 explanation of how Tesla’s businesses were intended to fit together. It describes integrating solar energy generation with storage and lays out ambitions for additional vehicles, autonomous driving and shared use of cars. The essay makes his strategy inspectable: readers can distinguish the sequence of products he proposed from the broader changes in energy and transport he hoped those products would produce. Its plans should be read with their original date, rather than as a statement that every prediction has been realized.[3]
