Career
Appenzeller co-founded Big Switch Networks and Voltage Security, leading them as CEO and CTO respectively. He later served as VMware’s CTO for Cloud and Networking, Yubico’s chief product officer and CTO of Intel’s Data Platforms Group. His employer biography records a Stanford PhD, a physics Diplom from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and a consulting assistant professorship at Stanford from 2008 to 2010.[1]
Contributions
In a conversation with Pat Gelsinger and Raghu Raghuram, Appenzeller examines the next wave of semiconductor development. AI may change chip-design work, but fabrication, memory bandwidth, packaging and power remain separate constraints. The discussion places design automation alongside the time and infrastructure needed to manufacture and operate the resulting hardware.[2]
Ideas
The same conversation revisits virtualization through the question of infrastructure built for agents. It connects the software abstractions used to manage computing with the economics of specialized chips, new memory and optical networking. Appenzeller participates as an interviewer drawing on an infrastructure background; Pat Gelsinger is the interview guest.[2]
