Career
Butcher studied graphic design in Cardiff and moved to New York in 2010. After work as a creative director and running an agency, he started Visualize Value in 2019. A daily black-and-white image became the basis for a catalog spanning art, courses and physical objects.[1]
Contributions
Let a few visual elements carry the argument
Visualize Value reduces an idea about work or value to a small arrangement of circles, lines, stairs or arrows, often with a short phrase. The constraints make relationships visible without a long verbal explanation. An image can also circulate separately from its original caption, leaving viewers to interpret the relationship for themselves.[2]
Make verification into a collector’s decision
Checks began as a grid of eighty colored checkmarks, responding to Twitter’s paid verification badge. Its later Originals system lets collectors burn and merge tokens, reducing the number of checks while changing the surviving work’s colors and supply. Animated SVGs use data and code on Ethereum. Butcher developed the project with collaborators including Jalil Wahdatehagh; collectors’ choices become part of the work’s visible state.[4]
