Career
Mathews graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in information systems. He created Gatsby and, with Sam Bhagwat, founded a company to develop it, serving as CEO and CTO. Netlify acquired the company and project in 2023. He subsequently cofounded Electric to work on synchronization for applications and agents. His current About page says he is at Databricks following its acquisition of Electric; it does not specify a new title.[1]
Contributions
Gatsby is an open-source React framework for websites. Its build and data layers connect content sources with page components, allowing teams to generate a site from structured content and reuse the surrounding application code. The project grew beyond Mathews’ original implementation into a wider contributor ecosystem. His creator relationship does not imply sole authorship of the current codebase.[4]
Ideas
Field Lab treats an agent as a guide to methods for examining a question. A term scan separates competing meanings; a substrate map reconstructs events before explaining causes; a field log keeps observations attached to dates and sources. The user chooses an instrument and interprets its result. The project aims to make an inquiry inspectable, while leaving judgment about evidence with the person using it.[3]

Read Field Lab’s instrument descriptions and try a bounded question whose assumptions you can inspect. A supported coding-agent client and the skills CLI are needed to install it; generated analysis still needs your judgment and source checking.
