Background
In his 2016 Nankai opening-ceremony address, Zhang recalls Liang as his roommate and a fellow microelectronics student. They shared a computer and studied programming together before becoming business partners. The account places their later collaboration in a history of learning and building software together.[3]
Career
From early engineering to company leadership
Liang co-founded ByteDance in 2012 and has been CEO since late 2021. His earlier responsibilities spanned product research and development, Lark and efficiency engineering, followed by human resources and management during expansion.[2]
Responsibility for the wider company
ByteDance’s current governance page lists Liang as chairman and chief executive officer, and separately as chairman of the board. These governance responsibilities extend beyond any one product team.[1]
Contributions
Lark combines messaging, documents, calendars and video meetings. Its product introduction shows a meeting workflow in which participants can open a shared agenda from the calendar, co-edit documents during a call and discuss changes in context. The design connects communication with the material a team is working on, reducing the need to move that context between separate applications.[4]
