Mario Zechner created libGDX and the Pi coding-agent toolkit. He joined Earendil in April 2026, bringing Pi into the company after years of work on game frameworks, compilers and developer tools.[1][2]

Zechner created libGDX, a framework for building games across platforms, and handed day-to-day leadership to contributors in 2016. At RoboVM he developed a debugger for Java applications on iOS. He later worked on Spine, a commercial animation tool built on libGDX.[2]
Contributions
A small agent core with visible context
Pi separates the model-provider API, tool-execution loop, terminal interface and coding-agent application. That lets developers reuse its pieces and inspect the information sent to a model. Zechner’s design essay explains why he preferred a small default toolset and explicit extensions over adding every workflow to the core.[3][4]
Explaining rendering through working programs
His r96 series reconstructs the techniques behind 1990s PC games with modern tools, pairing articles with source code and browser demonstrations. The assembly CFG viewer turns pasted assembly instructions into a control-flow graph, a picture of where execution can branch and loop. These projects make low-level graphics and program structure visible through small experiments, connecting his game and compiler work to material that other developers can inspect and run.[6]
Ideas
Zechner joined Earendil in April 2026, bringing Pi with him. The company already builds products on Pi, which gives its maintainer direct feedback from applications. He connects governance to his experience at RoboVM: after its acquisition, the open-source core was closed and the product shut down, but contributors restored an open fork. He expects to direct Pi’s development and treats its continued forkability as a practical backstop if the company changes course.[2]

An account of Pi’s provider API, tool loop, terminal rendering and deliberately small default interface.
Start here to understand why Pi has separate layers and which tradeoffs its author made. Some familiarity with coding agents helps; the essay explains the component boundaries.
Author[3]An essay arguing against the popular claim that coding is easy compared to figuring out what to build. The author contends that both writing good code and understanding customer needs are difficult, specialized skills, and dismisses the idea that AI has made coding trivial while product thinking remains hard.
