MySQL is a free, open-source relational database management system (RDBMS) first released in 1995 by Swedish developers David Axmark and Allan Larsson along with Finnish developer Michael "Monty" Widenius. Originally maintained by MySQL AB, it passed to Sun Microsystems in 2008 and then to Oracle Corporation in 2010, which continues to develop it today. It is one of the most widely used databases in the world, powering major web platforms and forming a core component of the LAMP stack.
