VP of AI Search; earlier Director of Machine Learning · Cohere

Career

Reimers completed his doctorate at TU Darmstadt in 2018 and continued there as a postdoctoral researcher through 2021. At Hugging Face in 2021–2022 he built a neural-search research team. He moved to Cohere in 2022, initially leading machine-learning work on search and classification; his current research page gives his title as VP of AI Search.[2][1]

Contributions

Sentence-BERT, coauthored with Iryna Gurevych, changes how BERT is used for sentence comparison. Instead of running a large network separately on every sentence pair, it produces a vector for each sentence, then compares vectors using cosine similarity. Those reusable representations make large similarity searches and clustering more practical. The paper evaluates semantic-similarity and transfer tasks; retrieval quality still depends on how well an embedding model fits the language and domain.[3]

Ideas

Reimers focuses on the shortage of labeled examples when applying neural search to a new domain. His work combines representations, reranking and generated training queries to address that gap. His published software and benchmarks give practitioners tools for checking methods rather than selecting a model from one headline score.[1]

Reusable sentence vectors make similarity comparison less expensive than evaluating every pair jointly.

Start with the sentence-pair comparison problem and the embedding diagram. Basic knowledge of BERT and vector similarity helps; use the paper’s experiments to understand what was measured before selecting a modern model.
