Nolen Royalty, known online as eieio, builds playful web experiences and tools. His work includes One Million Checkboxes, a shared public surface whose state every visitor could change, and yt-browse, a terminal search interface for YouTube channels.[1][4]

Career
Royalty spent seven years at Jane Street Capital after earlier jobs at Deepfield Networks and Amazon Web Services. He describes building many favorite projects at the Recurse Center, a retreat for programmers. His independent work puts games in unexpected interfaces and gives strangers opportunities to interact, often without monetization.[1]
Contributions
Make a simple shared state produce complex behavior
One Million Checkboxes gave all visitors the same million boxes. Checking a box changed the state seen by everyone, turning a minimal interface into a place for cooperation, conflict and unexpected patterns. Royalty’s scaling account follows the engineering consequences of that traffic, including keeping costs bounded, changing update delivery and eventually sunsetting the shared experience. The project’s appeal came from collective interaction, while operating it required controlling state and bandwidth.[5][6]
Search a channel beyond YouTube’s default controls
yt-browse downloads channel metadata and caches it for local terminal search. Users can search videos or playlists, choose title-only or description matching, combine fuzzy or regular-expression queries with date filters, and sort results. Local cached data makes repeated searches fast after the initial channel download; fetching it requires a YouTube API key.[4]
