PlanetScale is a database company founded in 2018 by Jiten Vaidya and Sugu Sougoumarane, the original creators of Vitess, the open-source sharding system built at YouTube in 2010 to scale its MySQL infrastructure. The company commercialized Vitess as a managed cloud database platform, popularizing Git-style branching and deploy requests for schema changes, and remains the largest contributor to the Vitess project. Now led by former GitHub CTO Sam Lambert, PlanetScale expanded beyond MySQL/Vitess to offer managed Postgres in 2025.
