Ren Ito is Sakana AI’s co-founder and chairman. His work connects the Tokyo research company with enterprise customers, finance and public institutions, drawing on earlier experience in diplomacy and international technology businesses.[1][4]

Career
Ito joined Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2001. His work included Japan–US security, Japan–EU trade negotiations and service at the World Bank from 2011. He later led Mercari’s European business and served as Stability AI’s chief operating officer before co-founding Sakana AI in 2023. His education combines law at the University of Tokyo and NYU with a Stanford master’s degree.[2][3]
Contributions
In May 2025, MUFG announced a multi-year partnership with Sakana AI and appointed Ito as an AI adviser. The bank described an initial focus on document workflows requiring complex reasoning, alongside advice on AI strategy. This is a concrete example of his commercial and institutional role; it does not make him the author of Sakana’s research systems.[4]
Ideas
Sakana’s product-development account describes Ito encouraging the company to consider model development as a business. The product team emerged from engineers discussing how to bring technology to more users than individual consulting engagements could reach. The account distinguishes research, enterprise implementation and product development as related activities with different routes to users.[5]
